Hello all,  I just wrote a long reply to all of you, and suddenly, I  hit the mystery key which erases everything and closes the window, so it is all lost.  No disaster for society, but I don't feel like typing it all over again at the moment.  Wish I knew which key that is!  It is infuriating to suddenly find yourself in a different window and not be able to find your way back.
In any case, thank you all for your kind replies.  Glad you are fine Merrihart, and I am going to close quickly before I lose everything again.

(Oh, I hate that mystery key!  when I"m on the laptop at work, the cursor will just mysteriously jump, causing my typing to go all over the place.)

BW,

Try writing your replies in word pad or some other word processor. Then copy and paste them into the reply box in the forum.

ctrl plus 'a' selects the reply
ctrl plus 'c' copies it to your computer memory
ctrl plus 'v' pastes the reply to the 'box' at the forum.

Hugs

ETA: But be careful that you don't hit the 'space bar' after you 'select' the text! Because if you do, the whole thing will disappear. Maybe that is what happened this time.

That's when CTRL plus Z comes in handy.  It allows you to undo the last action which in such a case would retrieve the lost text. On Macs, it's a special apple key (forget exactly what it's called) not the CTRL key.

Another way to recover lost typing, if you are doing it right in the browser and not in a separate text editor, is to use the browser's "back" button to go back to the page where you were typing the post.  When you get there, you'll have to copy the post, then back up one more page, hit "reply" again, paste in what you copied, and then hit post.  This has saved me many times when my login times out, or when a cat has stepped on the keyboard!

You can also go to "edit" on the menu bar and then "undo" if you've somehow wiped out highlighted text.

On Macs, the key that shadowmice refers to is the Command key.

Hi BW,

I've had to catch up on this thread -- and a lot of others. I'm glad to see that Esther Elizabeth seems to be doing better. I'm not glad to read that you wiped out. I'm also not happy that you were buried in and that you're not feeling so great with your heart meds again.

I'm wondering, and this is OT on this thread, but would it be possible for you to get this service:

http://www.lifeline.ca/content/english/

so that, if you fall or can't get out of the house or are having trouble of some sort, someone could get to you without you even having to get to a phone? Several ladies on my block have this service and it is very helpful. Perhaps you could talk to your sons about it seeing how they don't live with you and aren't just down the block.

I know you're a tough lady but there are times when you probably have thought you were really lucky -- like when you fell and by the grace of God, you came out of it OK.
My little babies, you'll always be in my heart. Mom will see you later. Look after each other, ok?

Oh my, so many really clever, helpful suggestions!  Merrihart, sometimes I think that some of the mystery key problems are the "touch pad" on the laptop.  I use a mouse, and HATE that touch pad, and it is possible that the heel of my hand or thumb might accidentally touch it and cause a problem, perhaps that might be why my cursor suddenly jumps up to a different line of text when I'm typing and then I wonder why I wind up typing in the  middle of the previous line of text!

Catbird, I have tried using the back key, but it just takes me to an empty page.  I can try again though, next time.

Shadowmice, I will try ctrl Z.

Caylee,  I have thought of trying to type in word processor and then copy it to my Itchmo reply box, never got around to it.  thanks for all the shortcut keys.  I'll try that and it might also solve my problem of only being able to type a certain amount into my reply box without all the weird  problems.  And I might be at about that amount right now,  YES, I am!!  EVerything has started dancing around.  will continue in next messazge.

Bug, I will go to that link and see how much it costs.  We have something called Life Alert here, but it is becoming much more expensive, and I have read complaints that it is not all that customer friendly.  There are other companies though.  I have thought about getting something like that.  My son tells me that my cell phone has the same GPS capability if I hit 911, and that it will give my location to police or whatever.  Dont' know if my  municipality is capable of receiving the GPS signal though.  Must look into all that.  I try to remember  not to go anywhere in the house or yard without my cell phone in my pocket.   I wind up hitting my hip pocket constantly to feel if I have it with me.   :)
As I always tell my sons,  if something should happen to me, I wouldn't want my cats to starve!!!  Scarey idea!

Glad to hear you'll look into it. I made a mistak on the link and gave you the Canadian site. This is the US site:

http://www.lifelinesys.com/content/home

The nice part is that if you can get the Auto Alert system, if you wipe out, the pendant will sense it and automatically call for help. You don't have to do anything.

thank you Bug,  I will call them tomorrow to look into it.
