Tab,  we have our Sophers kitty on Taste of the Wild for dry food and she is doing very well with it, they also have a doggy food.  I dont know the cost but I think it would be less than Science Diet and much much better for Champ at the same time.  You can also look thru the food pages here at Itchmo and get some other ideas for food.  I dont know anything about Orijen.

Ok...I'll check that out...

Thanks,

And I think lots of people here use Natures Variety and Wellness foods for their doggies too, you can look into those and the costs....

Jewel,
Does Champ get canned or dry?

My 2 German Shepherds have been on Wellness CORE regular dry since last August..  They are doing very well on it and you feed less of it than than many other foods.  Example:  My 80 pound dog gets 3-1/2 cups a day, and that is actually too much for her as she needs to lose about 5 pounds per vet.   This is a fairly active dog, 3-year-old dog.  It actually cost less than the r/d dry price you quoted, plus there are no GMOs in it.  It's grain-free.  Of course, it would depend on any allergies Champ may have.  She has a sensitive tummy, but has only had one diarrhea episode from digging up plants and tree roots in the yard and munching on them since August.  So, that is another one you might look into.  Petco is supposed to start selling it this summer.
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Jewel sound like Champ is past the point of going up the hill and starting a nice down slope to full recovery. My prayers and thoughts are with you both.
May your troubles be less,
Your blessings be more,
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door

Hi everyone,
Champ is still energetic wanting to play more and more....there was a couple walking their 2 GSDS down our street and Champ stood up to go greet them like he does all dogs...and cats....the lady grabbed her dogs by the collars and ran over to the other side of the street with this look of discuss on her face .....I just yelled out to her...very nicely..."he's not contagious".....some people!.....

NE ways.... he's still having slight issues with his left ear, but his right ear is starting to stand up again.....I'm still massaging and using warm towels on both of them....

He's eating us out of house and home!...lol....
I would like to get him started on a good kibble, but I'm afraid to do anything different right now...Don't want to cause a set back ...you know?....So I'll just continue to cook for him for now..........It's funny...my kids will call me at work and ask which pot in the fridge is theirs....LOL...his vet has recommended Eukanuba low residue...but I don't know ...just afraid right now..

He'll be going in to visit his vet tomorrow to have that ear looked at and to get a medicated bath.....It's so much better when they bathe him..because they get his scabs off alot better...although I still bath him twice a week at home.....

We prayed for a miracle and I really believe we're witnessing one!

Glad that you're seeing improvement!
FYI, we use Iams prescription that took the place of Eukanuba Low Res (for cats) because they said Eukanuba isn't making that anymore. My cats are doing fine on it (I don't like the ingredients, but CJ needs it for her medical issues . . . ). Go with whatever is working for you.

:)  This put a smile on my face, Jewel.  I am so glad that Champ s improving both physically, emotioanlly and psychologically.  It does warm out hearts to see our pets bounding in energy.

As for the food, I would not change anything that is working at this moment... I think it is important to keep things as stable metabolic-wise while Champ is healing.  And he seems to be doing so well with home-cooking and you knwo why, right?  It is fresh simple food minus all those fancy-kamanzy mixes in petfood!  I have seen my own cat turn around from a health issue just on simple home-made diet alone. I know with dogs, it would probably cost a lot more feeding this way --- but I think no more than feeding a teenager!   :D :D

So glad to read Champ's good news, Jewel. :)

jewel,

I agree with Kaffe i would not change a thing at the moment,  you know the saying if it isn't broke don't fix it.   ;)

This is so good to read.  I agree with the other posters.  Since he's doing so well, I'd be afraid to risk changing anything right now.

As far as the woman crossing the street, it sounds like she was just protecting her dogs from the unknown.

P.S.  We've also used the Eukanuba Low Residue dry for both dogs and cats previously for years without problems.  I thought Eukanuba and Iams were now the same company.  Both dogs and cats were on it for sensitive stomachs and irritable bowel.  One cat needed it for antibiotic-induced diarrhea after being on antibiotics for a long time.
