Cato

In honor of my Big Brother Kaffe, whom I adored, Meowmie said we should continue the work of which Kaffe was the main inspiration.  I said, "what a splendid idea!"  So for my first post in this new thread, I am giving the last home-made recipe that Meowmie made especially for Beloved Kaffe.  It may be a testament to the goodness of this recipe that my brother actually gained 6 ounces by the time he had to go to our forever home.

Kaffe's Cream of Chicken Soup
(for the debilated or recuperating kitty and ideal for syringe or assisted feeding)

500 grams          Chicken breast, meat only
1 Cup                Chicken broth
1/2 -2/3 Cup      KMR Kitten Milk Replacer by PetAg
7.5 oz               (or 3 x 2.5 oz jars) Beechnut Butternut Squash Baby food
1/2 tsp              Eggshell, finely ground to powder, or 900mg calcium citrate or
                       carbonate (NOT optional)
500- 1000mg      Taurine  (NOT optional - you may use only 500mg if giving a multivit,
                       1000mg if not)
8 - 10 tabs         Nu-Cat Senior  (Multi-vitamin and mineral tablets), finely
crushed  (optional if not feeding for more than 1-2 weeks - also, you
may use any appropriate kitty multi-vit-min of your choice)

Method:
1.  In a pot, cook the chicken breast in enough water to cover the meaty parts.*  Bring to a gentle boil and simmer for 45 mins to an hour to make chicken broth and to tenderize the breast.  When done, allow to cool before removing all the skin and finely shreding the chicken breast meat in prepation for the blender.  The meat has to be finely shreded in order for the mixture to become creamy in the blender.
2.  The water in the pot is the chicken broth.  Set aside at least 1 cup to mix in the blender.
3.  In a bowl mix together the crushed multi-vitamins, eggshell powder, taurine, babyfood squash and KMR milk replacer.
4.  Pour and blend all ingedients in a blender or food processor.  To get the right creamy consistency, you will have to do this in at least 3 lots; then using a large mixing bowl, combine and mix all the lots together.

*  You may want to MICROWAVE the chicken meat for 2 minutes becuase according to an article from the Cancer Institute, microwaving meats for 2 minutes BEFORE cooking actually lowers the levels of carcinogenic Heterocyclic Amines (HCA) produced when cooking meats at high temperatures.

**Finished product should look and smell just like cream of chicken soup for humans!

Thank you so much, Cato, for carrying on the good work for your beautiful brother.  I'm so glad you are here since Poco tried to respond to a couple of home cooking for cats threads, and he can barely cook his own dog food, let alone help anyone out with cooking cat food.    :-X  (And he looks really odd in those threads.)

Brave Poco!   :D

So good to hear from you Cato, and thanks so much for posting that recipe!  I'm going to save it in case one of the catties here need special food.  Tell your meowmie we use the T & T recipe from the Kaffe Kooks recipe book almost every day around here and everyone is doing well on it.

I hope you & Meowmie are doing OK and will stop in more often.  We do miss you here.  Pictures would be great!

Cato has taken quite a liking to Kaffe's Cream of Chicken Soup.  He licks his bowl clean when it is served.  I made a very big batch for Kaffe before he passed, and now Cato is finishing it all.  Good boy.

Cato, glad to hear from you.  Thank you keeping up your brother's good work.  We sure have missed you all.

This recipe is to help "bulk-up" JustMe's kittens' stools.  We use boiled chicken breast because next to raw, this is the part of the chicken that is easiest to digest when cooked.  We do not include the skin because of the fat content and because fat exacerbates diarrhea.  Cats should be on a grainless diet ideally but sometimes they need something to absorb intestinal baddies and to bulk-up their poopies.  Plain boiled rice fits this requirement and as a "grain" does not tend to irritate the GI as other grains like corn, even with IBD kitties.  Rice is a "good" grain.  Applesauce is used in the recipe for the pectin, which combats diarrhea.

Three Musketeers' Chicken and Rice
(for Freddie, Lily and Junior)

½ lb         Boiled Chicken Breast, meat only, finely shredded
1/3 – ½  Cup      Boiled white rice (make sure it is over-boiled)
¼ Tsp         Eggshell powder or 500mg calcium citrate/carbonate
2.5 oz (1 jar)      Beechnut Chicken and Chicken Broth Stage 1 Babyfood
1.25oz (1/2 jar)    Beechnut Applesauce Stage 1 Babyfood

*  If feeding for more than a week alone, a multivitamin/mineral supplement should be given to the kitties.
** It is best to feed kitties small meals several times a day instead of one big meal or two biggish meals.
