Spartycats

Welcome buglady!

Thanks for posting this.  I don't use this food, but that's very interesting.  Did the company tell you that they use bone?

Spartycats:  Yes, I emailed them and asked for the source of Ca in the food.  He said it was bone. I asked why it wasn't on the label and he said because AAFCO doesn't require it.  I never got to talk to nutritionist directly.  One of my dogs got sick and I got side tracked.  Need to email back and ask for as fed analysis.  Also asked if Menu made the food.  I figured that was a given since it was Canada, just wanted to see if they'd tell me.  No reponse on that.

FYI to those who buy this brand at Petsmart.  The store has announced they will stop carrying it in-store in the near future.  Some formulas will still be available on their website.

This could be a good thing or a bad thing. Either it isn't a big seller for them or the company is phasing it out. I hope it's the former.
My little babies, you'll always be in my heart. Mom will see you later. Look after each other, ok?

It's the one food I buy available at Petsmart.  I'll have to tell my pet food store they wont be carrying it, though he probably already knows.  He seems on the ball.  Sent the Wellness letter out to all his customers on line.

I am curious about the calcium in the byNature food being from bone; is it cooked? I was under the impression that one shouldn't cook whole ground raw food on the grounds that cooked bone was bad, plus I don't know if it would absorb the same?  Gypsy has been on this food for about 6 weeks, which great for her allergies, but I sometimes feel like she's done better on other foods.  I would add supplements to help but I don't quite know what to add since it supposed to be a complete cat food.

Cooked bone is "bad" because it splinters easily and can cause damage internally.  If it's already ground down, there's no chance of that happening.

That's the only reason I know not to give dogs and cats cooked bones from the dinner table.

Perhaps one of the others has more knowledge, though.

There have been instances of finding arsenic in bone meal also. If  you talk to them ask what the source of their bone is & whether they are testing it & for what.

You can see the bone bits if you mix up the food with water which will wash the pasty-texture food off them; they're slightly smaller than a grain of uncooked rice. For a while I was finding them in her poop and thought she was having a rodent catching fest.  Once when she vomited a whole bunch of little bits came up; they pulverized when applied a little bit of pressure so I worry less about splinters but I do still wonder if they're just passing through and she's getting calcium deficient.  I should check on the arsenic, too.

My kittens have been eating By Nature (chicken and turkey flavors) as part of their rotation.  No problems so far.

Got a refusal by all 4 kitties tonight, Organic by Nature Chicken & Chicken Liver best by date 6/20/14

never seen all 4 of them refuse a food before.

edit: ok, one cat ate most of their portion (1/4 can) but none of the others did.  The kittens have spoken, they definitely want venison.

I am posting this in experiences rather than problems as the food was not ditched by all 4. Well, after returning a bunch of the Weruva to the store this morning (see problem thread), I exchanged some for several varieties of flavors in "new" brands to try. I bought 3 By Nature 6 oz cans in different flavors.
Tonight I opened a  6 oz can of Organic Turkey&Turkey Liver. Amir ate it ok no problems, Bugaboo backed off, Casey and Smokey both ate a little but not with gusto. I should have known, the consistency reminds me of the turkey Evo that everyone got tired of before. So I ended up removing the By Nature, and pandering to the royals between 3 oz cans of Instinct Rabbit,  Merrick Cowboy Cookout, and good old FF Turkey classic. They cleaned their plates with this medley but eek.. $$$$..,I am really glad I only buy a few cans of any new flavors at a time.

After not finding it for several months, I found the beef flavor on petfooddirect this afternoon.  Bought 2 cases, with the autoship discount (6 month time period) got it down to 1.17 a can.  I hope it's not a left over case from last year.   :-\

By Nature has changed their cans from the deep 6 oz cans to the flatter, rounder ones.  I don't know what canning company they are using.  Also, they now pack 24 in a case instead of 12.  Got sticker shock today!  :P

Are these the new recipes, Merrihart?  I know they've had them coming out for a while, but I haven't seen them anywhere...
