I was surprised that cats would be motivated by this toy since it seems they have to move the ball around themselves.  Is there a catnip scent to it?

The ball isn't catnip scented, although, according to the manufacturer, the pattern on the ball is designed to attract them visually.

I think it's the motion that gets them going.  They give the ball a little tap, just to see what it is, and the ball starts rolling along the track.  That seems to trigger their prey instinct (the ball is, after all, about the size of an escaping mouse), and then they're hooked!  The more they chase it, the more it rolls.  But Cameo and Linley both like balls, and will roll them around the house.

So Linley has had some time with the new toy now, has he figured it out now?  Perhaps Cameo showed him how after some lengthy training sessions...?   ;D Poor Linley

He has pretty much ignored it all day.  Not Cameo, though!  She keeps going back to it, and is playing with it again right now.  Linley is sound asleep in his chair.  Must be too taxing for him, thinking so hard!  Poor boy. ;D

Maybe the extra exercise will help Cameo lose some weight. :-X

Wonderful pictures and captions catbird.
I can't stop smiling    ;D

Perhaps Linley is much like my Frosty, Gadget, Edgar and my DH.........waiting for it to have a "remote"... ;)

catbird

ROFL, Peg!  I think Cameo is Linley's "remote" now.  He sits on the other side of the room in an easy chair and watches her make the ball bounce back and forth.  (All he needs is a beer and some chips and he'd be the typical guy watching sports...)

This morning, Kalahari spent about 10 minutes closely observing how Cameo makes this work.  Then she took her turn, and was pretty good at it on her first try.  It's amazing to me how cats learn from watching each other.  (I couldn't get any pictures of Kalahari because most of the time she is very camera-shy.)

Maybe there is hope for Linley if he keeps watching Cameo long enough!

Cute photos and I love your captions!

Maybe Linley envisions himself as the coach - observing what they are doing - from his easy chair.  :D
May your troubles be less,
Your blessings be more,
And nothing but happiness
Come through your door

Great photos and great captions.

We just discovered that cardboard from toilet roll makes an excellent toy. I've tried to take some photos but unsuccessfully since Sophie is totally crazy about it and moves so quickly that I only get a blur :)

I just love the photos and captions!

I've had a rough week at work and haven't been on in a few days, but this just made my day!  I just couldn't stop giggling when I read through it, thanks, I really needed this!

These are wonderful photos!  Linley is having fun being a goof.
Cameo looks so wonderful and poised.

Are they still playing with their new toy, Catbird?
Eventually they will understand,
Replied the glorious cat
For I will whisper into their hearts
That I am always with them
I just am....forever and ever and ever.

Cameo plays with it numerous times per day.  It seems that every time she passes by it, she stops for a session lasting up to 10 minutes.  She is really fascinated with it.  Kalahari plays with it once or twice a day, but not for more than a minute or two.  The others ignore it.  Linley has given up completely. ;D

That could be it, Poco!  Cameo often lies down next to the new toy even when she isn't playing with it.  Maybe she has claimed it.  Today Cameo and Kalahari had a little interactive thing going--they were at opposite ends and were batting the ball to each other.  (Kalahari, who has a short attention span compared to Cameo, tired of it pretty quickly, though.)

Linley did walk up to the toy when Cameo was off napping.  He touched the ball with his paw and it moved a little.  So what did he do then?  Pawed at the ground next to the toy to try to get the ball to move!  (It didn't, of course.)

This catboy really learns slowly.  ::) Although you do have to give him points for creativity!

What cute action photos, Catbird. Poor Linley! Maybe he'll learn how to play with the ball in time.
