Whoa, I'd be scared about letting them on an open balcony. I'm sure this is a normal thing where you are, but that's pretty high up for my kitties and one of them is not so smart, bless her heart.

Wow, that looks high up.  I would never be able to let my guys and gals out on an open balcony.  I have a bunch that would fit right through those bars, and I have many who are not smart enough to realize that they are high up and cannot fly.

As Bug says, it may be normal for where you are.  BTW, where are you?

I would be scared to let them out on the balcony, too. Here in HK they have advice for safety proofing windows and balconies using transparent acrylic panels.

Sorry to scare everybody!  I guess the photo makes it look dangerous.  What the photo doesn't include is the big mess of chicken wire I have set up.

I am afraid my cats would climb right up chicken wire.  They climb up the window screens when they are chasing bugs.

Plexiglass is a good idea Aleko.  The condo complex next to mine had that on the balconies, and it was lovely because you could see right through it an enjoy the water.  But our complex wouldn't let us do that, we had to have the spindles which spoiled the view, well not completely, but the edge railing wound up at eye level.  That is one difficulty with an association.

I never let my cats out on the balcony, I just KNOW they would have jumped up on the railing, and it was vinyl so was slippery, I don't even want to think of them trying to keep from falling off, and of course the smaller ones would have fit through the spindles.  Yup Aleko, Plexiglass would have been perfect!  Couldn't see it, and solved the problem.

My cats can climb chicken wire, too, and just about anything else.  BJ jumps straight from the deck to top of railing and then down stairs.  Railings are 4 feet high, so very easy for him to jump.

Well now you guys have got me all freaked out!   I haven't stopped thinking about this post since I saw your responses!   I couldn't even bring myself to open the glass door this morning.  lol   

I've had it set up like this all year and we've never had even an attempt to climb up or out or go beyond the bars (they have to angle their heads to get them through the bars so it would be hard to dash out).  Are my guys just weirdly mellow?  They pretty much go and sit and hang out on a bathtub mat I have on the balcony.  There have been bugs, but my guys just sit and watch them crawl around!

My apartment is really small so I'm pretty much at the balcony wherever I am in my apartment LMAO.  Still, now I'm freaked out.  I need to go shopping.

August- Just extend the chicken wire to the roof of the balcony & you will be safe.

It is all the way to the roof, and curves back towards the room (like a big tidal wave)!
