TURKEY, 12.5 oz

Started new case, new lot.  Readily eaten by all cats.  No garlic on label.  No excessive goop so far.  Hope all the cans are like that.  (2 cases)

Started a new case from this lot yesterday, but with run times of 18:30 and 18:32.  Cats were not enthused yesterday and today with this.  It has a more whipped, air-filled consistency as opposed to tightly packed  (only way I can describe it)  My occasaional vomiter vomitted this 2 days in a row within 10 minutes of eating.  Other cats did not vomit and went back to finish food later.

It always seems to be the turkey that pops up...either plain turkey or turkey & salmon.  Sometimes one of the other ones but when we posted the summary updates a few months back turkey was a consistant thing.  I do know where I purchase it they say it is the best selling flavor...so that could perhaps explain why we see more problems with it over the other ones...if that was nationwide.  But then that wouldn't explain the turkey & salmon.

They also say turkey is the most popular at the feed store I frequent.  They often run out of it.  Good points, Jenny.  More to think about.

This week we're intermittently using some Turkey & Salmon, well accepted, particularly the 5.5 ounce cans with garlic.  :-[

The new arrival likes kibble, so the T & S, but the T & S has been well accepted by him.  He likes fishy foods.  My 2 oldsters like fish, too, so if it gets them to eat more......

We are new to Wellness...my cats like it. I too have noticed that the Turkey Salmon is whipped. The chicken was a normal pate. I feel the whipped has less in it since it is so fluffy. 1 can of chicken is enough for 2 meals each for my cats but not the turkey salmon, I always have to open another can to mix with the left overs of it for another meal.....

My cats are not crazy about the January and February batches (12.5 ounce cans) of turkey and chicken.  No ill effects, but they aren't crazy about it.  Sometimes leaving portions of it as opposed to licking their dishes clean.   I've been substituting some 3 ounce and 5.5 ounce cans from January dates, which they like much better.  :-\

The new kibble boy will not consistently eat food from the big cans, but readily eats food from the smaller cans.

The Jan-Feb cases seem to be the transition problem period.  I'm into the April dates now & the Turkey has firmed up some and there isn't as much goop on top for both Turkey & Chicken.  They both now have the air space at the bottom on most cans.  (I don't know if there is a flavor change since my cats inhale everything I put in front of them.)

I bought more the other day, and for some reason they had March lots in the Turkey there.  I haven't had any from that batch, so I opted to buy 2 Feb cases so I didn't have to try something new with the cats, again.  Kind of strange when you have to hunt for specific LOTS out of one food to get what you want.

Salmon & Trout   5.5oz
Best by 19 June 10

It's kind of unfortunate that different size makes for different taste.  The only size available where I am in Japan is 3oz, and the 4 grain-free flavors we have here are hit (for us this means that about .5 - 1 oz is eaten at a sitting) and miss depending on how the wind is blowing that particular day.

I ordered some 5.5oz cans from PetSage to see if the size would make any difference.

We tried a new flavor for us - our first Wellness canned with grains last night (as this can had a dent in it and I wanted to get it open and into a different container in the fridge asap).

The Salmon & Trout was a surprising 4 paws down.  Pretty much only Yoyo lapped at it a couple times before he decided it wasn't his thing.

Mine don't care for salmon and trout either, which surprises me because 4 of 5 are very fond of fish foods.

August and others....

Here is a great link regarding dented cans. Make sure the dents are not on the seam or edge where it meets the top or bottom.

Yes, that info is also under a thread I posted asking about dented cans.  Thanks!

Did my completely unscientific experiement today with older cans versus newer cans of turkey.  In comparing the labels, I noted that carrots have moved up a little in the ingredient listing on the February batch and sweet potatoes have moved down a little.

Two cans of Turkey, 12.5 ounce

27 JUN 10            (with garlic)
7WTKS1 08:50

11 FEB 11            (without garlic)
7WTKS1 18:35

I opened both cans and let 2 cats sniff them.  Cats sniffed and went immediately to the old can to try and lick.

Then I dispensed 1 heaping spoonful of each in the dishes of 11 cats (putting the old stuff on the right hand side of each dish)  All cats ate the old stuff first.  Some cats sniffed and went straight to it.  Some cats took a few licks of the new stuff, then ate the old stuff.  Eventually, they all cleaned their plates of everything, which is amazing since they've been picking at the new stuff.

From this little experiment, my cats prefer the old stuff as far as the 12.5 ounce cans go.

I'm wondering if with my older cats, it is the scent of the older stuff that makes them eat.

P.S.  Even the new cat (BJ, the kibble guy) preferred the older food over the new.

TBOBINA

12.5 oz Turkey
12.5 oz Chicken
12.5 oz Beef & Chicken
with BB dates of Feb 12/08
and Feb 14/08
Canada.
Both cats only take a few licks and walk away
not enthusiastic at all

Tbobina - did your cans actually say 08 on them?  If so, those are old, they should be reading '11 on them for the most recent batches.  Unless I'm reading the code wrong.  Also, I thought only the smaller cans were made in Canada.  I wonder if you got old food from your store?
